Prep sports: Opening tips tonight in basketball, wrestling

With the cold weather upon us, Top of Utah basketball squads are ready to jump into action tonight and Wednesday as the preseason play begins around the state.

Following a solid slate of games tonight -- including boys games like Northridge at Bountiful, Ogden at Box Elder and Ben Lomond at Bonneville -- the teams take a four-day Thanksgiving moratorium before resuming preseason action next week.

Girls games today involving two local schools include Bear River at Logan, Morgan at Mountain Crest, and Bountiful at Sky View.

The Layton Christian girls got a jump on the action, posting an impressive 58-19 victory over Tintic on Monday night in 1-A action.

Alyssa Atisme led the Eagles with 18 points and combined with Brittany Griffith to spearhead LCA's defensive pressure.

Point guard Shayla Simpson led the Eagles with seven assists and four steals as well.

1-A girls teams start and end their season a week early in prep basketball.

The high school wrestling season also begins this week, with a few dual meets as well as the Turkey Dart tourney at Davis High and the Oakley Invitational in Summit County.
