LAYTON -- The Utah Department of Transportation will add another lane to Interstate 15 in the Top of Utah this spring.
Adding to its growing collection of auxiliary lanes, UDOT will install one on I-15 from 650 North in Clearfield to 5600 South in Roy.
The lane will cost $7 million to build and will go out for bid in December, with construction beginning as soon as the weather permits next year, said Rex Harris, UDOT Region One program manager.
The auxiliary lane will serve traffic flow between two Hill Air Force Base entry gates -- the West Gate, which receives heavy daily traffic, and the Roy gate, where large shipping and equipment trucks enter the base.
The construction work will include installation of improved stormwater drains and concrete traffic-control barriers, as well as the paving of the new asphalt lane.
The work typically takes 90 days to complete.
Auxiliary lanes are becoming a growing priority for the state. UDOT recently finished adding two new auxiliary lanes in Davis County.
Last spring, the state put an auxiliary lane in both directions on the interstate between Antelope Drive in Layton and Bernard Fisher Highway (State Road 193) in Clearfield.
The state also constructed a new auxiliary lane on northbound I-15 between 500 West in Bountiful and Parrish Lane in Centerville.
UDOT Region One spokesman Vic Saunders said the lanes benefit overall traffic flow because they allow people getting on the freeway enough time to build speed and give extra time to motorists exiting the freeway.
The freeway has similar auxiliary lanes in Layton near the Antelope Drive and Hill Field Road exits and in Ogden near the Riverdale Road, 31st Street and 12th Street freeway exits.
UDOT officials say the lanes have improved traffic flow in those busy spots.
