FBI admits mistake in Utah gang numbers

SALT LAKE CITY — The FBI has amended a report that mistakenly identified Salt Lake County as among the top 10 worst in the country for gang activity.

The FBI now says the number of active gang members in the county is about 2,500.

The FBI originally reported in October more than 15,000 gang members were living in Salt Lake County, which multiple agencies disputed. That was ninth-highest in the country.

David Johnson of the FBI’s Salt Lake field office says the numbers came from area police agencies, all of which supplied a county-wide estimate of 2,500. The FBI blamed the mistake on a computing error.
