Officials: Husband shot wife and killed himself

PORTERVILLE -- Grant Wadman, 57, shot and killed his wife, Marilee, 41, before taking his own life, the Morgan County Sheriff's Office believes.

In a news release issued Tuesday, the sheriff's office said the state medical examiner determined the shootings occurred one week before family members and deputies found the bodies of the couple in their home at 390 W. Hardscrabble Road.

When they arrived Thursday, deputies found two bullet holes in the home's north- facing windows and discovered the bodies of the couple in the living room, protected by their two dogs.

Deputies had responded to domestic disturbance calls at the home several times in the past two years. The couple married in September 2009.

The two had several brushes with the law in recent years.

Grant Wadman had two drunken driving convictions, one in Roy in 2008 and one in Morgan County in spring 2009. He was arrested in the 2009 drunken driving case, 13 days after completing probation for the 2008 case.

The sentences were similar in both cases: probation of less than a year with 16 hours of substance abuse treatment completed, according to court records.

In an Aug. 31 assault last year, Grant Wadman was the victim, telling police he and Marilee had been drinking to the point of intoxication, according to charging documents. He awoke to "Marilee punching him in the face. She bit his arm, left marks on his neck and belly."

Marilee Wadman was found guilty of attempted assault and disorderly conduct and completed probation about a month ago.

Under her prior married name of Clark, Marilee Wadman was also arrested for assault in April 2009 in Morgan County. Records in the state courts online database did not identify the victim, but included the note "the case involves domestic violence."

She was placed on six months' probation after pleading guilty to the charge.

Both obituaries for the couple included the request that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to domestic violence programs.

Larkin Mortuary suggested donations go to the Marilee Clark Wadman Memorial Fund at any America First Credit Union branch. Walker Mortuary asked that donations go to the Grant Wadman Memorial Fund at any Golden West Credit Union.

After funeral expenses, both said, all remaining funds will be donated to a local organization helping with domestic violence or crisis situations.

The Morgan County Attorney's Office is reviewing investigative reports into the couple's deaths.
