Local collegiate athletes honored

CEDAR CITY -- Southern Utah University's Analaine Pelaez-Mailoto and Gabi Mirand have been honored by the Summit League with a pair of postseason awards after wrapping up play last weekend.

Pelaez-Mailoto -- a former Fremont High standout -- was named first-team all-Summit League for the third consecutive time in her career after leading the league in points per set with 4.66 and ranking second in the conference with 4.15 kills per set. The Hooper native became the first player in SUU volleyball history to surpass the 1,000 kill mark after the sixth match of the year and currently has 1,447 for her career. She is a junior.

Mirand was named to the Summit League all-freshman team after leading the team with 9.36 assists per set. Mirand was also second on the team with 27 service aces and finished the year with 67 kills, 180 digs and 36 blocks.

The Thunderbirds will be moving to the Big Sky Conference during the 2012-13 season.

* TRIO OF AGGIES HONORED: Utah State had three players earn all-Western Athletic Conference volleyball honors, announced by the league office Sunday as Liz McArthur was named to the first-team, Shay Sorensen earned second-team all-WAC honors, and Paige Neves was named to the all-freshmen team.

McArthur, a senior outside hitter from St. George, was named first-team all-WAC for the second-straight year after ranking fourth in the league in kills (3.76) and points per set (4.21).

Sorensen, a junior opposite side hitter from North Ogden, earned second-team all-WAC accolades for the first time in her career as she is hitting .203 and averaging 2.60 kills, 0.85 blocks and 0.72 digs per set. In WAC games, Sorensen -- a former Weber High standout -- ranks eighth in the league in points per set (3.28) and ninth in kills per set (2.83).

Neves is a freshman setter from Otto, Wyo.

Soccer

* FOUR TOP OF UTAH DIXIE SOCCER PLAYERS HONORED: Led by a first-team nod to senior defender Clayton Alexander, five Dixie State men's soccer players have been named to the 2011 Pacific West All-Soccer Team.

Second-team forward Jordan Roylance (Sky View High), midfielder Nyle Ortiz (Layton High), and goaltender Tyler Walters (Ben Lomond High) join Alexander, with an honorable mention to midfielder Tyler Albretsen (Weber High).

Roylance earned his third All-PacWest selection this year after claiming First Team honors in 2009 and making the Second Team last year. Ortiz, a senior, had 13 points on five goals and three assists. Walters, a sophomore, finished the year 7-7-0 with five shutouts, a 1.14 goals against average, with 82 saves. Albretsen, a junior, had two goals, six assists and 10 points to go along with two game-winning scores.

The Dixie State women's team had four honorees, with sophomore forward Mindi Beckstrom (Mountain Crest) and senior defender Kelsey Tesoro earning first-team honors, freshman forward Jennifer Mason named to the second team, and senior Camille Jensen (Sky View) named honorable mention.
