AARP Tax-Aide, the largest free tax-preparation service in the country, is looking for volunteer tax counselors to prepare basic income taxes at no charge for seniors and low- and moderate-income taxpayers from Feb. 1-April 15. This community service is provided at local senior centers or libraries. Basic tax knowledge and computer literacy is required, and Spanish speakers are needed. Abundant Life Social Services provides detailed assessments and evaluations as well as make recommendations based on current research in the social and behavioral sciences. Volunteers are needed to join the board of directors. For more information contact Darwin Crosland at 801-244-0084.

American Cancer Society is dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy, and service. Volunteers are needed to provide clients with transportation services, one-on-one discussions, and facilitate support groups. American Red Cross of Northern Utah provides assistance in times of disaster; courses in first aid, CPR, and water safety; a way to connect with family members overseas in the military; and utility assistance for the elderly and disabled. Volunteers are needed to assist with preparedness education and emergency supply efforts, promote and coordinate programs at health fairs, entering shelter information, and much more. Antelope Island State Park is home to bison, bighorn sheep, pronghorn, mule deer, many migratory birds, birds of prey, coyote, bobcat and rabbits and more. Volunteers are needed to work at the visitors center and the Fielding Garr Ranch to provide information to the visiting public; trail patrol volunteers monitor and maintain the parks trail system by running, hiking, biking or horseback riding along the various trails; and environmental education program volunteers to help teach school children. Autumn Glow Senior Activity Center in Kaysville provides classes, trips, activities, social interaction, health and nutrition information, entertainment and one daily meal to any senior 60 or older who wants to participate. Applegate Hospice is seeking volunteers in Weber and Davis counties to provide companionship to patients a few hours per week and offer support to their loved ones. Volunteers must be 18 or older. A 12-hour training program will be provided. Call Marry Bybee at 800-871-0102 or 801-603-4792.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah matches low income single parent children (ages 6-12) with caring adult volunteer mentors. Volunteers will provide children and youth with individualized time and attention on a regular basis, typically two-four times a month, for two to three hours. Boys and Girls Clubs of Weber-Davis provides after-school and summer programs for kids ages 6-18. Volunteers are needed to assist program coordinators in teaching daily programs. The areas in need of help are character and leadership, education and career, health and life skills, the arts, sports, fitness and recreation. Court-appointed special advocate serves abused and neglected children that are involved in the Juvenile Court system through no fault of their own. Volunteers needed to serve as the eyes and ears of Office of the Guardian ad Litem and the court by gathering information about the child and the family, and most importantly, getting to know the child. Rocky Mountain Hospice/Faith in Action helps meet the needs of caregivers meeting the demands of a dying loved on or caring for a loved one suffering from a debilitating health condition. Volunteers are needed to provide hospice patients with companionship, running errands, yard work, and light housekeeping. Training will be provided. Volunteers will need to pass a background check. Utah Museum of Natural History at University of Utah is looking for people to volunteer as Museum Gallery Interpreters and Discovery Cart Volunteers. Volunteers interact with Museum visitors via conversation, hands-on activities and museum artifacts. A background or an interest in paleontology, archaeology, biology, geology, anthropology, or ecology is preferred. Museum volunteers receive half-price museum membership after 40 hours of work and discounts at the gift shop, in addition to continuing educational and social opportunities. Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), Volunteers are needed to electronically prepare and send tax returns. Free training in simple tax law with an emphasis on the credits available for low-income families. Volunteer a minimum of three hours per week from January through April.
