OGDEN -- The Weber State University softball team has signed nine players to national letters of intent, head coach Tina Johnson has announced.
Rudi Barrios, Dusti Blair, Jessica Chaulklin, Jessica Craner, Brooke Ford, Lindsey Kamphuis, Krystin Kubo, Jazmine Thompson, and Millilani Vanta have each signed to compete for the Wildcats, beginning in the spring of 2013.
"Our 2012 recruiting class is athletic, versatile, offensively confident, solid defensively, and academically responsible," Johnson said. "We have a good balance of speed, power and consistency within this group. They play with a lot of heart and determination. Our goal is to recruit athletic, coachable and smart players with potential, and this class represents that well."
Barrios is a 5-foot-5 middle infielder/outfielder from Upland, Calif. Blair is a 5-foot-4 infielder/outfielder from Vancouver, Wash., where she played for the Vancouver School of Art and Academics, Hudson Bay High School and the Northwest Sidewinders Gold.
Chaulkin is a 5-3 outfielder/infielder from San Jose, Calif., where she played Leland High School and the San Jose Sting. Chaulklin has three sisters currently playing collegiate softball.
Craner is a 5-3 infielder/outfield from Corinne, who joins Weber State as a junior college transfer from Snow College. She played at Box Elder High School, and was a member of the Bees' 2006 state 4-A championship team.
Ford is a 5-9 infielder from Salem, where she played for Salem Hills High School..
Kamphuis is a 5-11 pitcher from Kennewick, Wash., where she played for Kamiakin High School and the Washington Explosion.
Kubo is a 5-6 outfielder/infielder from Waipahu, Hawaii, where she played for Leilehua High School and Kaikamahine.
Thompson is a 5-7 outfielder from Riverside, Calif., where she played for Riverside Christian High School and Minors Gold.
Vanta is 5-4 utility player from San Diego, Calif, where she played for Mira Mesa High School and The Next Level.
Baseball
* DIXIE STATE ADDS SEVEN: Dixie State College welcomed seven additions for the 2012-2013 season. In the letter of intent early signing period. Red Storm head coach Mike Littlewood has added four junior college players along with three high school players, including three from Top of Utah high schools.
The group includes outfielder Ryan Wescott, RH pitcher Bubba Blau, RH pitcher Kort Christofferson, RH pitcher Kody Christofferson, RH pitcher Tyler Fox, infielder Bryce Feist, infielder Drew McLaughlin, and pitcher Mick Jarvis.
Wescott started 46 games as a freshman at Paradise Valley Community College in center field and hit .262 with 24 RBIs on a team that advanced to the NJCAA II World Series.
Blau, a former Roy High standout, pitched in 20 games for Cochise College last year, logging 39 innings with a record of 1-2 and ERA of 3.69 with 36 strikeouts.
Kort Christofferson, a former Weber High standout, started 7 games, pitching in 11 for the College of Eastern Utah as a freshman. He threw 36 innings with 31 strikeouts with 6.75 ERA, and also posted a .280 batting average in 82 at-bats.
Kody Christofferson, the younger brother of Kort Chirstofferson, led Eastern Utah in several pitching categories as a freshman. The former Weber High standout appeared in 19 games as a freshman, starting 9 and winning 3 games in the highly competitive SWAC. Pitched 50 innings with 37 strikeouts and ERA of 5.40.
Fox holds virtually every Playball Sports record, including single season strikeout leader (92), single season ERA (0.79), career innings pitched (149), and career strikeouts (140), he is also second in single season wins (17).
Feist is a 2011 2nd team All SIC selection as well as a member of the 2012 Mountain West Scout Team. As a junior Feist hit .368 with 3 HRs, 10 2Bs and 30 RBIs.
McLaughlin, an all region performer Desert Mountain, Az., High School, hit .340 with 11 2Bs and 20 RBIs with 2 HRs.
Jarvis helped lead Desert Hills to a third-place finish at the state 3-A tournament in 2011 as a junior.
