Layton Walmart evacuated by small electrical fire

LAYTON -- Firefighters are reminding shoppers that if emergency personnel are evacuating a store it is for a good reason.

At 2 p.m. Tuesday, Firefighters and police were called after a small electrical fire broke out in Walmart at 745 W. Hillfield Road, said Battalion Chief Jared Jolley.

The fire was out by the time firefighters got there, but the emergency personnel were called as a precaution, he said.

The fire did singe some wires and put smoke inside the store.

Store personnel, firefighters and police were going through the store asking customers to leave.

"Most were really cordial," Jolley said.

But a few customers were hesitant about leaving the store before they finished their shopping, he said.

"When we evacuate a business it's for their safety and there's always a reason," Jolley said.

Shoppers were let back in the store 30 minutes later, he said.
