ALTA -- A coin is what ultimately decided who's filling a seat on the council of a small Utah ski town.
Steven "Piney" Gilman was re-elected to the Alta Town Council Monday after his opponent called tails and the coin landed heads-up.
Gilman and Merbea Danforth had both received 60 votes in a Nov. 8 election for an at-large council seat in the town of 383 people.
Salt Lake County elections officials recounted the ballots Friday, but the tie remained.
Mayor Tom Pollard said the coin toss didn't seem like the right way to decide the winner, but state law dictates a game of chance should be used to break ties.
