SALT LAKE CITY -- A judge has dismissed a federal class-action lawsuit filed by inmates against the Cache County Jail over a policy change that limits most mail to postcards.
The lawsuit filed on behalf of three inmates and a bishop from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints claimed the policy would force inmates to stop writing or risk divulging personal information to those handling the mail.
County officials say the policy was designed to cut costs and reduce contraband that might come in a letter.
Court records show the lawsuit was dismissed by U.S. District Judge Dee Benson on Tuesday in Salt Lake City.
Benson's order states the lawsuit became moot after the inmates were transferred out of the jail.
