TWIN FALLS, Idaho -- A 26-year-old Nevada man who killed a stranger at a southern Idaho hotel in July will spend the rest of his life in prison.

Clark Cleveland of Spring Creek, Nev., was sentenced Thursday for killing 43-year-old Tracy Ivie of Lindon, Utah, and taking a woman hostage on July 15. An Idaho State Police trooper had tried to stop Cleveland near Filer, but led officers on a high speed chase toward Twin Falls.

Cleveland got into a crash at an intersection and ran into a hotel.

Cleveland pleaded guilty to first-degree murder last month to avoid a trial and a possible death penalty. He also pleaded guilty to kidnapping and aggravated battery on a police officer for shooting Idaho State Police Trooper Nicholas Walker in the leg.

Cleveland said he regrets his actions.
