Parents face abuse charges for 'deplorable' home

SOUTH SALT LAKE -- A Utah couple charged with child abuse lived amid rotting food, dirty diapers and garbage, police said.

Todd and Ariel Tiede of South Salt Lake remain jailed Thursday. Their six children were with relatives.

One of the couple's twin infants was taken Nov. 3 to a hospital with a skull fracture. According to the charges, neither the 29-year-old father or 25-year-old mother could explain what happened.

Doctors at Primary Children's Medical Center notified police, who paid a visit to the family's apartment.

"It was deplorable," South Salt Lake City Police Chief Chris Snyder told the Deseret News. "Definitely one of the worst officers had been in. Trash that hasn't been taken out for weeks, rotten food left out in the open, bathrooms haven't been cleaned. It was absolutely disgusting."

Police found the children -- all under the age of five -- with head lice.

The couple was arrested Wednesday on seven counts of child abuse.

No defense attorney was listed in court records.

"It was absolutely not a place for a child. It was not safe, not sanitary," Snyder said.
