Rules of conduct now established in Syracuse

New rules of conduct for the city’s planning commission will include tough language about how commissioners should handle potential conflict of interests.

The city council adopted an eight-page set of guidelines for the commission at a recent meeting, after changing language involving potential conflicts of interest for commission members.

The new guidelines stipulate a commissioner must not only state a potential conflict of interest and abstain from voting, but leave the dais when the matter is discussed.

Months in the making, the guidelines come on the heels of a city council effort to also adopt rules of order for council meetings.

Council members discussed one of the proposed guidelines in detail in a work session, airing concerns about attendance requirements for the chair of the group, and also whether a commissioner should have experience in the post, before being elected chair.
