SALT LAKE CITY -- The Utah Department of Transportation hopes federal money will benefit a few Top of Utah construction projects in 2012.
At Thursday's Utah Transportation Commission meeting in Salt Lake City, the state announced it is seeking money from the Federal Highway Administration to complete several projects next year that otherwise will have to wait.
The state is hoping to get as much money as it can from seven discretionary grant programs offered by the administration.
UDOT is applying for a total of $158.5 million from the seven grants.
"We've worked with the different regions around the state to get their priorities and goals, and we tried to come up with a list of projects that we can push forward on," said Bill Lawrence, UDOT program and finance director.
The list UDOT has compiled includes projects throughout the state of Utah, with several in Weber and Box Elder counties.
The state wants to replace the Interstate 84 bridge deck where it crosses over Interstate 15 in Riverdale, a spot commonly known as "Applesauce Corner" because of a few accidents there involving trucks carrying fruit.
UDOT also wants to replace a bridge at 7900 East in Huntsville where it crosses the South Fork of the Ogden River.
Also on the list is a project that would add a new lane on I-15 from Farr West to Willard in Box Elder County.
Finally, the list includes projects to improve safety features on state routes 30 and 42 in Box Elder County, the Monte Cristo Highway and Logan Canyon.
"We feel like these projects are very deserving," said UDOT Executive Director John Njord. "But whether we get the money or not, we'll have to wait and see."
Lawrence said the applications are due Jan. 6.
