Prep basketball: Trojans exact revenge on Wasps

MORGAN -- Coach Jim Wiscombe said revenge wasn't a motivating factor, but deep down inside there must have been a sense of satisfaction.

In a rematch of last season's 3-A state championship game, the Morgan Trojans jumped out to an early lead against Wasatch on Wednesday night and held on to beat the Wasps 73-65.

Christian Wiscombe was true to his nickname, "Swish," knocking down four 3-pointers and scoring a team-high 20 points to lead the Trojans (5-1) to the victory.

"It feels good to beat Wasatch," Jim Wiscombe said. "It's been a while since we've beat them. We're different teams from last year, but it's still a good win. Wasatch is used to being champions and they battled us hard. It was a good preseason game."

Morgan's lead hovered around eight to 10 points for most of the game, including a 15-point margin early in the third quarter after a Jake Miles 3-pointer. But even then, there was an uneasy feeling in Morgan, knowing that the two-time defending champs could make a run.

And that's exactly what they did. The Trojans got out of their offense a little bit and the Wasps' leading scorer Matt Pelo started bringing his team back, cutting the lead to six points with just under seven minutes to play.

"Wasatch was tired, but we had no patience on offense," Jim Wiscombe said. "We'd just pass it once and then shoot it or throw it away. When a defense is tired that's what they want you to do. I was not happy with our lack of patience at the end of the game."

But the Trojans caught a huge break when Pelo committed his fourth and fifth fouls in a span of 15 seconds to foul out with 6:27 to go. He finished with 20 points.

Wasatch's Parker Davis converted a 3-point play with three minutes left to bring the Wasps (2-3) to within two points, but that's as close as it got down the stretch.

Boston Saunders scored 15 points for the Trojans and Miles added 13. Cameron Skinner came off the bench to score nine points -- all in the second quarter. At one point in that quarter, Cameron and his brother Colby scored 11 straight points for the Trojans.
