FARMINGTON -- Syracuse Fire Chief Craig Cottrell resigned Thursday, the same day drug charges were filed against him in 2nd District Court.
The Davis County Attorney's Office filed two third-degree felony charges of obtaining a prescription under false pretenses against Cottrell, 42.
The charges were filed following an investigation by Davis Metro Narcotics Strike Force, according to court documents.
Mayor Jamie Nagle said Cottrell resigned from the fire department for health reasons.
"We are grateful for what he has done for the city, and he's been a good chief," she said. "We wish him the best."
Cottrell has been with Syracuse for five years.
Nagle said Cottrell had not been served with the court documents as of Thursday afternoon.
According to the court website, a hearing is set for Feb. 2, when Cottrell is expected to make his first appearance in court.
Cottrell is accused of getting at "least two prescriptions for a controlled substance from different medical providers without informing the other that he was getting controlled substances from another medical provider," according to the court documents.
Those incidents occurred between Dec. 10, 2010, and Nov. 3.
Deputy Davis County Attorney Rick Westmoreland said the controlled substance was Lortab.
