EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- First, Don Mattingly was known as Donnie Baseball. Now, you might call him "Donnie Ballet."

Mattingly was set to don a dress instead of a baseball uniform Saturday to appear as Mother Ginger in the Evansville Ballet's production of "The Nutcracker."

The Evansville Courier & Press reports (http://bit.ly/vIvO7P ) that ballet artistic director Mark Bush dropped hints to Mattingly's wife, Lori, before inviting the L.A. Dodgers manager to play the role in October.

After Lori Mattingly described the part of the character whose gigantic skirt and petticoats hide about a half-dozen children who spill out to dance, the newspaper says Don Mattingly agreed to do the role.

Don Mattingly told his hometown newspaper that he was impressed by the dancers' athleticism and had enjoyed the rehearsals.
