Ogden spa offers weight-loss help

OGDEN -- Losing weight can be a daunting task, so one local doctor has tried to make it easier by offering a physician-assisted weight-loss program to help assess overall health and check on factors that may be sabotaging weight-loss efforts.

"The traditional approach has not been very effective at controlling weight loss," said Dr. Brent Williams, co-owner of Timeless Medical Spa & Weight Loss Clinic with his wife, Debbie.

"It's not very effective in changing people's behavior. There has to be some easy options for people. If you just tell them to get their calories down and exercise, it doesn't work."

As a family practice physician for more than 20 years, Williams was frustrated because he could not effectively help people who struggled with weight issues that often led to major health problems.

He opened the clinic six years ago to offer the weight-loss program in addition to the latest technologies in esthetic skin care and treatment.

He continues to work part time as a family care physician for Intermountain Health Care.

"I've saved more lives with weight loss in the last six years than I have in the last 30 years of passing out medications," Williams said.

He is one of only six doctors in Utah who is a board-certified member of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians, a medical weight-loss specialty organization.

Williams is a big proponent of dealing with weight issues before they lead to other major health problems.

"I think weight issues are an enormous part of our health problems as they relate to some types of cancers, heart disease and some diabetes," he said.

Debbie Williams is a certified bariatric medical assistant and spends her time at the clinic counseling people on how to eat better.

"It is so exciting to make a difference in people's lives," she said. "We've had people get off medications with their weight loss and others whose Type 2 diabetes went away."

Mike Burton, of Roy, came to the clinic specifically because the weight-loss program was supervised by a physician. He has lost 30 pounds so far by following the program and said he experiences very little hunger.

"It's deeper than just 'eat this, eat that, don't eat that,' " said Burton, who meets with Dr. Williams regularly. "It's about analyzing you as a person and your own body and coming up with a way to lose weight in a safe way."

The program is similarly priced as other weight-loss programs, the doctor said, in addition to reducing client's food bill as they start buying less junk food.

He never says it will be easy. However, it is a very doable program.

"It's not as difficult as people think. People think they have to be miserable, but they can be comfortable after a few weeks. Many feel better than they have when they straighten out the way they eat."
