Prep wrestling: Alta wrests Warrior Duels title away from host

PLEASANT VIEW -- Alta High wrestlers played spoilers to the host Weber Warriors as they took top honors at the Warrior Duels wrestling tournament Friday and Saturday.

Mat marauders from eight schools clashed in the round-robin tournament at Weber High School as Alta's Zane Rasmussen (106), Matt Findlay (113), and Gavin Godfrey (152) won all seven matches in their respective classes on their way to the team podium's top spot.

Weber placed four wrestlers at the top of the 145, 160, 182, 220 classes to take second place, and Logan rounded out the top three, putting wrestlers at the top of the 126, 132, 138, 170 and 285 classes.

"Alta's got a solid team," Weber wrestling coach Jeff Eure said. "The tournament was good overall and it exposed some of the weaknesses and things we need to work on moving forward."

The Warriors had a solid showing in the middle and heavy weights on their home turf as Hunter Riggs, Mack Huntsman, Devon Childress and Jared Tracy all finished tops in their classes.

Riggs logged four pins through his matches in the 145 weight class, one of which came against Alta's Will Kilpack.

"He's (Kilpack) first in the state right now," Riggs said. "It was close but I pulled it out."

Childress nabbed the top spot in the 182 class for the Warriors after taking the tie-breaking match when he and Logan's Josue Arredondo both finished 6-1.

Tracy notched a pair of pins and two decisions for the 220 title and Mack Huntsman scored pins in five of his seven matches to round out the Warrior first place finishes.

"I've set my goals all year to be undefeated," Huntsman said. "I felt like my first few matches were a little slow but then I picked it up with the rest of the team as the weekend went on."

Other top area performers included Bear River's Dominic Kunder (120); Logan's Talon Teeples (126), Quinn Hinckley (132), Isaac Harrison (138), Spencer McKay (170) and Jacoby Wildman (285), as well as Sky View's Klayton Kelsey (195).

Bear River finished fourth, followed by Tooele, Sky View, Lone Peak and Clearfield in the team standings.
