SYRACUSE -- An engineer who has consulted on city projects for several years has been hired as the city's new director of public works.
The city council voted unanimously to hire Robert Wheatley as the new director, replacing Mike Waite, who resigned earlier this year.
Wheatley has worked as an engineering consultant on city projects. The city currently hires consultants to handle engineering and legal work on local projects, though that is expected to change in the near future with a recent council move to add a full-time engineer and a full-time lawyer to staff.
Mayor Jamie Nagle called Wheatley's appointment a perfect fit and said he addresses a concern she had with Waite's departure and the loss of institutional knowledge.
Wheatley's salary is $90,000 a year.
