LAYTON -- Several low-income families and individuals will have food for the holidays, thanks to Davis Hospital and Medical Center.
With a goal of raising 1,000 pounds of food to donate to Family Connection Center Food Bank, the employees at Davis Hospital and Medical Center went far beyond what they had planned to donate. They recently wrapped up a monthlong food drive that collected more than 7,700 pounds of food.
"It's just amazing how they've come through for us," said Daneen Adams, FCC's director of development. "Right now we have been bombarded with people coming in for the holidays, and it takes a lot of pressure off us to know we can help all these families."
On Thursday, the FCC will distribute the food to low- income families and individuals in need of emergency food assistance.
The food bank picked up the donated food weekly throughout the drive, which ended Dec. 15. The cumulative total of 7,724 pounds was the second-highest donation to the food bank this year, Adams said.
"The food drive was a friendly competition among various employee, volunteer and physician groups within the hospital, and they all rallied to make sure the overall donation would make a significant difference to our neighbors who are in need," said Mike Jensen, CEO of Davis Hospital and Medical Center. "The season of giving extends to more than just gifts for friends and family. I'm sure I speak for all involved when I say we are glad to have the opportunity to give in this small way to our community."
Adams, who said the Davis County Fair donated a little more than 8,000 pounds of food, pointed out that the doctors from the hospital also volunteered during Thanksgiving.
Adams said: "It's so great when businesses in the community come together, especially around the holidays, because there is such a need."
