Prep basketball: Trojans have little trouble with Tigers

MORGAN -- The defending Region 11 champion Morgan Trojans have picked up right where they left off.

Jake Miles and Boston Saunders each scored 23 points to lead the Trojans to an impressive 62-44 win over the Ogden Tigers in the region home opener on Wednesday night. Miles scored 12 of his points on 3-pointers -- all in the first half -- and the 6-foot-4 Saunders was too strong underneath against the smaller Tigers.

"Jake had a terrific first half," Morgan coach Jim Wiscombe said. "He did a great job shooting the ball. And Boston was just a workhorse tonight. We got him the ball inside and (Ogden) had a tough time matching up against him because of his size and strength. They both had great games."

The teams kept it close for the first quarter and a half, including a tie score as late as 18-18. But an 8-0 run by the Trojans -- five from Saunders and three from Miles -- broke the game open midway through the second quarter.

Ogden never got closer than six points after that.

"We'll take that win," Wiscombe said. "I think we can compete with teams. I think on our home court we should be hard to beat. I would hope we could protect our house. But you've got to win your home games and then you've got to go out and get some road victories to be where you want to be."

Going into Wednesday's game, Ogden's Spencer Smith and Lyden Egbert were both averaging better than 14 points a game. But the Trojans held them to six and eight points, respectively.

"Ogden didn't shoot the ball as well as they normally can," Wiscombe said. "They've got some very good shooters on their team. The Smith kid had some open shots in the first half and thank heavens he missed them. At their place they probably make those shots."

Morgan improved to 2-0 in league, 7-1 overall.

Kael Buck scored 14 to lead Ogden, while teammate Blake Newman added 10 for the Tigers, 0-2, 3-6 overall.

* WEBER 57, WASATCH ACADEMY 43: At the JNF's Hoops Classic at Salt Lake Community College, the Warriors had three players in double figures to pull away from the 2-A Tigers.

Hayden Schenck scored 21 points for Weber (7-1), which led 26-22 at the break. He added four assists.

Justin Nielsen added 15 points and Jake Shaw chipped in with 10.

* WOODS CROSS 77, BOX ELDER 69: At Brigham City, another barn-burner for the Bees, but unfortunately, another tough defeat.

After scoring 37 total points in the first three quarters, Box Elder (1-6) outscored Woods Cross 32-25 in the final period. Kolby Quayle scored 20 points, while Ben Rex added 15, Shad Watson had a dozen and Trevor Cobbley scored 11.

Skyler Farnes led the Wildcats with 22 points, while Brady Cowley and Filipo Mokofisi added 15 each and Sean Barton tallied 14 points.

* WEST JORDAN 60, FREMONT 46: At the Riverton Winter Invitational at Riverton, the Silver Wolves (4-3) hung around against the highly touted Jaguars but couldn't draw any closer. Jordan Loveridge led West Jordan with 18 points.

Brock Smith scored 24 for Fremont to lead all scorers.

* MOUNTAIN CREST 55, TIMPANOGOS 49: At Hyrum, the host Mustangs had a huge fourth quarter to put Timpanogos away.

Tyler Crosbie scored 23 points for Mountain Crest. Famafili Pututau added a dozen points.

* SKY VIEW 63, ELKO (NEV.) 32: At Smithfield, the Bobcats ran away from their out-of-state foe with ease. Sky View led 33-11 at the break.

Riley Knowles led the Bobcats with 13 points.
