Farmington City Council mulls smoke-shop rules

FARMINGTON -- New guidelines and rules for a smoke shop in this community are in the works.

Members of the planning commission and staff recently discussed at length city guidelines for a smoke shop and are addressing a city ordinance for the shops, plus initiating research from surrounding communities to see how other cities regulate the businesses.

Earlier this month the commission held a public hearing on the issue and voted 7-0 to table the item, while addressing potential zones for the specific kind of business.

There has been discussion about limiting the stores to one single commercial zone and setting guidelines for how near the stores can be located to schools or churches.

City Manager Dave Millheim said he is likely to initiate discussion at the city council level on the issue in late January, after two new members of the council have taken the oath of office and had a little time to adjust to the positions.
