$4.5M gift is largest in USU sports history

LOGAN -- Utah State University officials say they've received the largest donation in the athletic department's history when an anonymous donor gave $4.5 million toward a training and conditioning center.

Athletics Director Scott Barnes announced the gift Friday morning at a meeting of the school's board of trustees. He called the gift a "game changer" for the school's 16 sports programs and 400 athletes.

Trustees had given the green light in November for the $6.2 million center that will feature areas for weight training, cardiovascular workouts, and speed and agility training.

At the time, they said they hoped a private donor could cover most of the cost.

The center is expected to open by summer 2013 and is meant to alleviate crowding in the existing training facility, which is three times smaller.
