Bird festival student art contest seeking entries

FARMINGTON -- The 14th annual Great Salt Lake Bird Festival announces its 2012 Student Art Contest, sponsored in part by a grant from the Davis County Commissioners' Cup Golf Tournament and Rio Tinto Kennecott Utah Copper.

All Utah students from kindergarten to 12th grade are invited to submit an original drawing or painting in color of a Black-crowned Night Heron using personal observation, field guides, or Internet resources to research their artwork. An instructional packet with pictures is available at www.GreatSaltLakeBirdFest.com and is attached to this email.

The Black-crowned Night Heron will be the 2013 Festival Spotlight bird.

Contest entries will be judged in one of four grade categories, with winning artists from each category receiving cash prizes. An overall Best of Show image will also be chosen and featured on the 2013 Great Salt Lake Bird Festival's promotional materials. Entries must be hand delivered or postmarked by April 6, 2012 at festival headquarters in Farmington (Davis County Memorial Courthouse, 28 East State Farmington UT 84025 Room 221).

All artwork will be displayed for public viewing as part of the festival, to be held May 17-21, 2012. The event is expected to draw more than 3,500 local and out-of-state participants for numerous field trips, workshops, free family activities, and special speakers. Although Utah's incredible array of wild birds is the focus of the festival, attendees will have the opportunity to learn about a range of topics including local geology, reptiles, botany, mammals, and insects.
