Bond $500K for Utah abortion doctor accused of murder

ELKTON, Md. -- A doctor charged with murder in connection with abortions has been arraigned in Maryland.

Dr. Steven Brigham of Voorhees, N.J., was arraigned in Cecil County Circuit Court in Elkton Friday. He faces five counts each of first-degree murder and second-degree murder in abortions he allegedly performed in a clinic in Elkton.

The Cecil Whig reports that bond was set at $500,000, which court documents show the 55-year-old Brigham has made arrangements to post. (http://bit.ly/w888QK)

Brigham's co-defendant, 46-year-old Dr. Nicole Irene Riley of Salt Lake City, Utah, remained jailed in Utah without bond.

The allegations against Riley and Brigham mark the first time that abortion providers have been charged under a 2005 Maryland law that allows authorities to bring murder charges in the death of a viable fetus.
