CLEARFIELD -- Police are investigating a shooting just before midnight here Friday that injured a 35-year-old Layton man.
Darrell Morris, 35, was hospitalized at Ogden Regional Medical Center, according to a news release from the Clearfield Police Department.
As of Saturday evening, he was still listed in critical condition, said hospital spokesman Craig Bielik.
Saturday morning at the scene, Clearfield Sgt. Kelly Dennett said Morris was shot in the north parking lot of the Heather Estates apartment complex, 25 E. 1800 South.
It wasn't clear how many times he was shot, but Morris was taken directly into surgery at the hospital, Dennett said.
Police were seeking a silver-colored four-door "Lincoln-type vehicle" seen leaving the scene, plus three males seen running from the area, according to the news release.
Witnesses reported hearing three shots. Police from Clearfield, Layton, Syracuse, Clinton and the Davis County Sheriff's Office responded to the call, which came in at 11:33 p.m.
Police said Morris had been visiting friends at the apartment complex.
A resident, Kelly Lancaster, said she went downstairs after hearing a noise and found Morris on the ground. She administered first aid with the help of two other people, she said, one pulling the victim's clothes away from his wound and the other applying pressure to it with a towel.
Police said Morris had at some point gone to the apartment he was visiting to tell friends he'd been shot.
Police described a single wound to the abdomen. The residents who assisted Morris indicated the wound appeared to have entered from the back and passed through his body.
Anyone with information is asked to call Clearfield police at 801-525-2806.
Residents said a man with a knife believed to be chasing the assailants was Tasered by police and handcuffed, but apparently wasn't arrested nor was he mentioned in the news release.
