Utes fall to Washington 57-53

SALT LAKE CITY  -- Terrence Ross scored 14 points and hit two free throws with 9 seconds left to help Washington outlast Utah 57-53 on Saturday.

Desmond Simmons collected 10 rebounds off the bench to help the Huskies (9-6, 2-1 Pac-12) bounce back from a blowout loss to Colorado two nights earlier.

Josh Watkins scored 18 and Cedric Martin 11 for the Utes (4-11, 1-2), who threatened down to the final seconds.

There were plenty of chances for the Huskies to close it out in the final minute, but they gave the Utes second life when Simmons and Ross combined to miss the front end of one-on-one opportunities on three consecutive trips to the line.

That allowed Utah to claw back once more. The Utes made it 55-53 when Martin buried a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left.

Ross helped Washington escape by finally hitting a pair of free throws with 9 seconds to play.
