SALT LAKE CITY -- Officials at Salt Lake City's Hogle Zoo say dinosaurs and a major Christmas light display helped make 2011 their best year ever for attendance.
The zoo hit the record of 1,023,696 visitors on New Year's Eve, which was the last night for the ZooLights! animated Christmas light display.
The 2011 numbers are about 2,000 visitors over the previous record set in 2009, when 1,021,066 people came to see the animals. That was the year the zoo welcomed a popular baby African Elephant named Zuri.
Officials say last year's attendance also was boosted by a summertime dinosaur attraction dubbed "Zoorasic Park."
