Utah abortion doctor to face murder charge in Maryland

SALT LAKE CITY -- A Utah doctor has waived extradition proceedings and will be transported to Maryland to face felony murder charges after a botched late-term abortion in 2010.

Dr. Nicola Irene Riley waived extradition after a judge denied a request for bail during a hearing in Salt Lake City's 3rd District Court on Monday.

Maryland authorities charged the 46-year-old physician two counts of murder and one count of conspiracy to commit murder in December.

Police began an investigation of Riley and New Jersey Dr. Steven Brigham in August 2010 after a botched procedure at Brigham's clinic.

It was not clear Monday how quickly Riley would be transported to Maryland.

Defense attorney Edwin Wall has asked the court to set bail at $30,000. He says Riley is not a flight risk.
