BOUNTIFUL -- Longtime City Attorney Russell Mahan will assume the role of interim city manager in this community for at least a year, effective in February.
He replaces Tom Hardy who announced his resignation from the job in late 2011 to serve a one-year mission for the LDS Church in the Washington, D.C. area. Hardy leaves for that mission Feb. 13.
The council's vote to name Mahan to the post also included a provision to allow Hardy to return to his post, once his mission is over, if he so chooses.
Mahan will act as both city attorney and city manager for the year.
A graduate of BYU Law School, Mahan has been the city attorney for 31 years and said he is comfortable working in the position in an interim role, regardless of what Hardy may choose to do. He expressed appreciation for the council's support.
As city manager, Mahan will be responsible for supervision of approximately 165 full-time city employees and working with the city council overseeing the second-largest city in Davis County.
