PLAIN CITY -- It didn't take long for the home crowd and the Fremont Silver Wolves to take control of their non-league game against the Bonneville Lakers on Tuesday night.
A smothering defense and an efficient offense helped the Silver Wolves jump out to a commanding 41-16 halftime lead and they cruised to a 60-36 victory.
"I thought that we executed on both sides of the ball, especially in the first half," Fremont coach Corey Melaney said. "We lost a little there in the second half, but we're always going to be a defensive team and that worked out for us tonight.
"I thought that we got some big contributions from our other guys like Rowdi (Stucki) and Jordan (Preator) in the game. We are starting to come together as a team, but our record starting tomorrow is 0-0 with league play coming up."
From the outset, the aggressive Silver Wolves grabbed ahold of the momentum to take a 21-8 first-quarter lead. That run carried over into the second quarter, with Fremont shooting 58.6 percent in the first half and its defense holding Bonneville to a paltry 26.3 percent.
In the second half, the Lakers made some changes that allowed them to cut the lead to just 14 behind the play of Beck Nelson, who controlled the offense and the defense.
However, the lead was too much to overcome and the Silver Wolves began to regain the 20-plus lead behind easy inside baskets and the play of Brock Smith.
Smith dominated the entire game with his post presence and finished with 19 points and 15 rebounds to lead Fremont. Preator and Spencer also chipped in with double-digit scoring at 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Bonneville was led by Quinton Larson's 10 points, but he finished 2 for 8 from the field in the loss while the Lakers went 11 for 37 in the game.
