BOUNTIFUL -- City leaders are making an earnest effort to recognize and thank people, organizations, companies and communities that helped the city following a Dec. 1 windstorm.
During Tuesday's council meeting, Mayor Joe Johnson and council members recognized with plaques at least 20 groups that pitched in to help the community after the windstorm. Salt Lake City, Woods Cross and Utah Department of Transportation were among the honored.
Johnson said he still marvels at how people came out to help, and said if key contributors in the cleanup have been overlooked, city leaders would like to be notified to recognize their contribution.
Streets Superintendent Gary Blowers estimates the community effort saved city crews at least three to four months of cleanup. City Manager Tom Hardy estimated the volunteer effort saved the city $300,000 to $400,000.
