BYU newspaper to switch to weekly

PROVO -- Brigham Young University will scrap its daily newspaper for a weekly publication and put more emphasis on a digital reporting.

The Daily Herald of Provo reports (http://bit.ly/wu50cu ) the Daily Universe will make the change at the end of April.

School officials say eight advertising and design staffers and newspaper advisors will be laid off with severance packages.

The weekly newspaper will be reflagged as the Universe. Daily reporting will continue at http://universe.byu.edu/ .

The school says the Daily Universe has been losing money since 2009.

Managing Editor Joel Campbell says today's editors and producers want writers in the job market to have digital skills.
