PLAIN CITY -- Council members cannot seem to agree on whether to include storage in the improvements at Town Square Park, so the item was tabled for the Jan. 19 council meeting.
Council members have agreed on a new building with restrooms and a bowery with tables, but have not decided how many tables and are at odds over the storage issue. A kitchen once included in the plan has now been dropped. There are plans to have the restroom doors face the playground rather than the street.
Councilwoman LaFray Kelley has proposed that two storage areas be included in the building to store parks equipment, as well as arts and sports items. Kelley also suggested that the trailer used to transport the mower could be stored there.
"We've got two storage areas," Kelley said. She said that when the restrooms were rotated to face the playground, the building also was made 3 feet wider, but Kelley said the building still fits in the original footprint of the old building.
Councilman Brent White said restrooms and a bowery were appropriate for the location but questioned the need for storage as part of the building.
"That is high-cost real estate for storage," White said.
"We could put the storage on the end. Costwise, we will be just giving the (grant) money back if we don't," Kelley said. "I understand what you are saying, but that's the money we've been awarded."
"In the middle of town, in a leisure park, I don't want a bunch of storage," said Mayor Jay Jenkins.
Kelley said the items stored at the park would be used there sometimes, as well as at other parks.
White said the city needs to look at the broader situation, rather than cut and paste, as he said has been done in past years.
"Frankly, it drives me crazy," White said. "Look at where we are going to have storage in the future and then explore every option before we just say stick it here and that makes sense."
Kelley said the council does have time to make a decision and get the ball rolling, because the city has been given an extension to the end of March to have the bids in on the project.
