SALT LAKE CITY -- The Great Salt Lake Institute at Westminster College is getting a $250,000 grant to expand its research into the lake's extreme ecosystem.
The school announced this week that the W.M. Keck Foundation is supporting a new undergraduate research initiative dubbed BRINE, which stands for Building Research, Innovation and Novel Experimentation.
School officials say the Great Salt Lake remains largely unexplored and has great potential for one-of-a-kind undergraduate research projects.
Faculty and students have been working on projects such as studying the high mercury content in the lake and exploring brine shrimp genetics.
The Los Angeles-based foundation was established in 1954 by W.M. Keck, who founded the Superior Oil Company. The foundation focuses its grants on medical research, science and engineering, and undergraduate education.
