Girls basketball: Lakers win, hold on to share of first place

WASHINGTON TERRACE -- Is this the year the Lakers win their first league girls basketball title since the 2003-04 season?

"It's our goal to win region and we believe we're good enough to win region," Bonneville senior combo forward McKinlee Westmoreland said.

The Lakers, behind 15 combined bench points from Lexie Stratford and Abby Toller, overcame 38.0 percent shooting (19-of-50) Thursday to beat Region 5 runner-up Sky View 55-46 and retain their share of first place.

The 18-year-old Westmoreland, who tore the ACL in her left knee and missed the second half of last season, grabbed a team-high nine rebounds with five deflections and five points.

"It was the worst feeling to sit out because I wanted to be in there so bad," Westmoreland said. "I'm going to leave everything on the court and give my team everything I have this season.

"I'm a leader being a team captain, but more of a defensive player and rebounder," she said. "If I score, that's just a bonus."

Junior Emilie Volk scored a team-high 17 points on 5-of-11 shooting -- 7-of-7 at the free-throw line -- with nine boards, three assists and three steals for Bonneville (11-3 overall, 3-0 league), which won its fifth straight game and is 6-2 in its last eight.

Sophomore point guard Cortney Porter had nine points, eight rebounds, six assists and three steals for the Lakers, who outrebounded Sky View 41-34 and committed 16 turnovers. Toller tossed in seven points with eight boards, one assist, a blocked shot and eight deflections; Stratford scored eight points.

Bonneville effectively changed zone defenses to keep the Bobcats (9-5, 1-2), who shot 34.8 percent (16-of-46) off-balance. Tara Goldman scored a game-high 19 points for Sky View, which committed 16 turnovers.
