The Smith Spectrum group has been nominated for the 2012 Naismith Student Section of the Year award.

USU is one of 79 schools up for the honor, part of the "I Love College Hoops" campaign, which is celebrating 100 years of college basketball. Utah and WAC schools Fresno State and Nevada are also nominated. The winner will receive a $5,000 contribution to the school's athletic department.

The first round of competition is public voting at www.facebook.com/ILoveCollegeHoops.

To the surprise of very few, Greg Ostertag, the former Jazz center approaching age 40, recently gave up his pro basketball comeback by retiring from the Texas Legends of the NBA's D League.

Ostertag's 38-year-old knees apparently weren't as excited about the comeback attempt as he was.
