SALT LAKE CITY -- Winter is throwing a punch at northern Utah, bringing heavy snow and causing road closures and power outages across the region.
The Deseret News (http://bit.ly/wfBk3L ) reports eastbound Interstate 80 at the mouth of Parley's Canyon was closed just before 5 p.m. Saturday, and traffic was being diverted.
A winter storm warning is in effect for much of northern Utah and the Wasatch Front, and the National Weather Service warned that a "cold and energetic storm system" would bring "significant" snow accumulations to the mountains.
The Utah Avalanche Center listed the danger for potential slides in Logan, Salt Lake, Ogden and Western Uinta as "extreme," their highest warning level.
About 1,800 customers lost power in the Salt Lake Valley because of weather-related outages.
