OGDEN -- Ogden heavyweight Billy Zumbrun pounded veteran heavyweight Cliff Couser from corner to corner for four-plus rounds before the referee stopped the main event midway through the fifth round before a crowded ballroom at the Eccles Conference Center in Ogden on Saturday night.
Couser, 26-22-2, from Las Vegas, fought mostly defensively, occasionally scoring with a right hand, against Zumbrun, 25-12-1 (15 KOs), who seemed to land punches at will most of the time.
The bout almost ended in round 2 when Couser took two eight counts from the referee after Zumbrun staggered his opponent with head and body shots. In the fifth round, Couser crumpled to the ring floor after a Zumbrun flurry, prompting the stoppage.
In an exciting four round preliminary fight, Clearfield's Eddie Cordova, 3-0-1, avenged the only blemish on his record with a decision over Chris Asher, 0-5-2, of Bozeman, Mont. Asher was often on the offensive and seemed to hurt Cordova briefly in round 3.
However, Cordova, the better boxer, landed many more punches. The three judges scored the bout 40-36 for Cordova. The Standard-Examiner scored the bout 39-37 for Cordova.
In a four-round heavyweight fight, Ogden's Fred Spitzenberg scored a unanimous decision over Clearfield's Gary Cobia. Both fighters were debuting as professionals. The better-conditioned Cobia was tentative for most of the fight after catching a few hard left hooks early from the overweight but ring savvy Spitzenberg. The judges calls were 40-38 and 40-37 twice. The Standard-Examiner scored the fight 39-38 for Spitzenberg.
The rest of the fights were amateur contests. In a heavyweight bout, Ogden's Jessie West was flattened in a the second round with a left hook from Ben Ferrin to abruptly end a well-matched contest. Another local heavyweight, Chance Rutherford, scored a decision win over Junior Martin.
Vladimir Estrada scored a close decision win over Dalton Lewis, Jesus Soto won a narrow decision victory over Travis Jones, Aaron Griffin took the nod over Fernando Olmedo and Francisco Lopez outpointed Aaron Olmedo.
There was a lengthy 45-minute delay during the boxing card when the boxing ring began to buckle. It was fixed and the large crowd, eager to see Cordova and Zumbrun in later bouts, seemed to take the delay good naturedly.
