Sandy man gets 6 months jail in puppy stomping case

WEST JORDAN -- A 42-year-old Sandy man convicted of stomping his girlfriend's puppy to death has been sentenced to six months in jail.

The Deseret News reports (http://bit.ly/w99Dyq) 3rd District Judge Terry Christiansen called David Stepper's actions "inexcusable" at sentencing Monday.

Stepper's girlfriend Rebecca Johnson testified earlier that she bought the puppy as a Christmas gift for her children. Stepper had been working out of town for several weeks, and Johnson tried to keep the dog hidden when he returned because Stepper didn't want the dog in their house.

The couple argued after Stepper discovered the puppy, and Johnson said Stepper stomped and killed the two-pound dog last Jan. 27.

Stepper pleaded guilty in December to a misdemeanor animal cruelty charge, but he says he doesn't know what happened to the dog.
