Tigers, Bears swimming well

The Region 11 swimming championships were staged Saturday at Tooele Aquatic Center, and the Bears and Tigers put a scare in host Tooele.

"We swam well and the Bear River girls swam very well," Ogden coach Amanda Halverson said. "Jodi Pham set a couple of school records and we qualified 16 swimmers for the upcoming state championships."

Tooele won the girls title chase, but Bear River and Ogden were nipping at their heels.

Pham won the 100 butterfly event in 1:06.16, breaking a school record on the books since 2003. Pham also broke her own 50 freestyle record and finished second in the 100 breaststroke.

Marci VanWagenen finished second in the 100 freestyle and swam third in the 200 individual medley. Cheyanne Cobbs was third in the 100 freestyle for the Tigers. Gretchen Gochnour provided depth for Ogden.

Bear River's Meagan Ballard won the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke, while Camille Ballard was third in the 100 breaststroke. Ashton Roundy swam second in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle. Sariah Stanley-Grey and Missy Roundy also scored key points for the Bears.

Maleena Miller finished fourth and fifth in a pair of events to pace the Ben Lomond girls.

On the boys side, Ogden's Brady Wahlstrom won the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle to lead the charge.

Teammate Skyler Child was second in the 50 freestyle, and finished third in the 100 freestyle. Colton Van Wagenen was second in the 100 freestyle and fifth in the 50 freestyle. Peter Eck and Josh Greiner also provided points in the meet.

Bear River's Jacob Kerby swam second in the 100 backstroke, and was third in the 50 freestyle

Ben Lomond's Isaac Gonzales was second in the 100 breaststroke with teammate Ty Fejerany fourth.

* REGION 5 REDUX: While Mountain Crest swept the championships, several Box Elder swimmers posted strong efforts in last week's action at Hyrum.

Box Elder's Tyler Laws was second in the 200 freestyle, while Chauncey Harlow swam second in the 500 freestyle and Alex Huntsman was second in the 100 breaststroke. The Box Elder relay teams finished second in the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay, and third in the 400 freestyle relay.

Bonneville's Kade Hall swam third in the 100 breaststroke to lead the Lakers' efforts.

On the girls side, Bees Cassandra Perkins, Tiffany Jeppesen, Jessica Weight and Shannon Weight all posted fifth-place efforts.

Meanwhile, Clearfield's teams finished sixth in the difficult Region 6 championships on Saturday morning.

The Region 1 championships are Friday at Layton's Surf 'N Swim.

The state 4-A and 3-A championships are set for Feb. 3-4 at BYU, with the 5-A championships set for Feb. 10-11, also at BYU.
