WASHINGTON TERRACE -- It says something when your top two scorers do not crack double digits -- combining for just 11 points, 13 under their season averages -- and you knock off the two-time defending league champion, which had only lost one Region 5 game over the last two seasons.
Still, it took a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from sophomore shooting guard Kayla Eilertson to boost the Lakers past state 4-A runner-up Mountain Crest 48-45.
Tuesday's victory, which was Bonneville's sixth straight, gave the Lakers (12-3 overall, 4-0 league) sole possession of first place nearing the midpoint of league play.
"I was pretty confident when I shot it," the 15-year-old Eilertson said. "I didn't know for sure it was going in, but I knew it was long enough. I called 'bank' in my head."
Eilertson, who was just 1-of-6 from the floor with three blocked shots, banked in the game-winner from the top of the key with 0.3 seconds remaining.
Bonneville's win snapped an eight-game skid versus the Mustangs, and was the Lakers' first victory over Mountain Crest since a 44-40 home-court win on Jan. 4, 2008.
The Mustangs (8-6, 3-1) had tied the score 45-all on two free throws with 49.5 seconds left.
"The designed play broke down," Eilertson said. "I was supposed to get the shot, but it wasn't open. I passed the ball back to Cortney (Porter), and when I looked up there were 2.6 seconds on the clock.
"I made a fake and knew I had to put something up," she said. "It's the biggest shot I've hit in high school. I expected this type of game, but not going down to the last shot."
McKinlee Westmoreland, a senior combo forward, scored a team-high 16 points on 7-of-14 shooting with a game-high 13 rebounds, including eight offensive boards.
She also had two assists and three steals for Bonneville, which shot 32.0 percent (16-of-50) -- 22.2 percent (2-of-9) on 3-point attempts -- outrebounded Mountain Crest 37-31, committed 12 turnovers and swiped eight steals.
"McKinlee always does well," Eilertson said. "She is always doing something to help the team win, and tonight it was her turn to score."
Porter, a sophomore point guard, had 11 points, three rebounds, four assists and two steals. Emilie Volk, the team's leading scorer averaging 13.57 points per game, had eight points, four boards and a steal before fouling out with 3:58 remaining.
Karlee Kartchner, the state's leading scorer at 24.31 ppg, scored a game-high 20 points for the Mustangs, who shot 36.6 percent (15-of-41) and committed 12 turnovers in having their seven-game winning streak snapped.
* SKY VIEW 81, ROY 48: At Smithfield, the Bobcats outscored the Royals 25-8 in the first quarter and Sky View cruised the rest of the way.
