Ogden board sets later start to school

OGDEN -- The Ogden School Board has approved its 2012-13 calendar, with classes starting Aug. 27, half a week later than in the 2011-12 school year.

That was after board members discussed other options that would have started the school year even later in an attempt to spare students a few more late-August days in the district schools that lack air conditioning.

"Our two traditional high schools have air conditioning. Our three junior highs and most of our elementary schools don't," said Don Belnap, school board president.

Ogden district schools that don't have air conditioning are George Washington alternative school; Highland, Mount Ogden and Mound Fort junior highs; and Bonneville, Gramercy, Hillcrest, Horace Mann, James Madison, Polk, Taylor Canyon, T.O. Smith, and Wasatch elementary schools.

Belnap said if temperatures are uncomfortably hot in the early days of the next school year, he hopes administrators and teachers can give the board suggestions on how to cool things down.

Some ideas mentioned in a recent board work session include finding fans to keep air circulating, temporarily moving classes in the hottest rooms to cooler parts of the buildings and sponsoring cool drinks.
