CEDAR CITY -- Southern Utah University is announcing a $4 million donation that ranks as the largest gift in the school's 115-year history.
The donation from Walter and Alice Gibson is designated for the College of Science and Engineering and will fund an endowment for research and scholarships.
The school will be naming the college in honor of the late Walter Maxwell Gibson, who graduated there in 1952 with an associate's degree in chemistry.
Gibson continued at the University of Utah and earned a doctorate in nuclear chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley.
Gibson was a researcher at Bell Laboratories before serving as physics department chair, dean and vice president of University at Albany.
He co-founded X-Ray Optical Systems in 1990 and served as chief technology officer before his death in 2009.
