KAYSVILLE -- Someone should tell Abel Porter he is only a sophomore.
Just don't expect his teammates to treat him like one.
Porter, a 6-foot 1 point guard for Davis, drove the lane to make a tying basket, was fouled on the play and then converted the free throw with 15.7 seconds remaining to lead the Darts into a first-place Region 1 tie by taking down Fremont 47-44 on Friday evening.
The 15-year-old Porter was playing at Fairfield Junior High a year ago and becomes only the third sophomore to start for Davis in the 22 years that Jay Welk has coached there.
"We knew coming in he was a pretty good player," Welk said. "His teammates have confidence in him and don't treat him as the new kid on the block."
"My teammates are all great to play with," Porter said. "There were four other guys on the court that Fremont had to guard and that created the opportunity for me to drive to the basket. Then we played great defense at the other end and that won the game for us."
Davis (10-5 overall, 3-1 league) was down by one at halftime, but Porter scored the first seven points of the third quarter and 12 of his game-high 14 points in the second half. Tyson Denney added 10 points, including two key free throws with 5.3 seconds left to round out the scoring.
For the defending region champion Silver Wolves (9-6, 3-1), Brock Smith led the way with nine rebounds and 13 points (nine in the fourth quarter), including two free throws with 43.7 seconds that gave Fremont a 44-42 edge, setting up Porter's game-winner.
Turns out Porter isn't old enough to drive a car, but can definitely take it to the basket.
