Robert "Bob" Charles Veals Sr. will celebrate his 80th birthday with his family at the Maddox Ranch House Restaurant. The fifth child in a family of eight, he was born Jan. 30, 1932, in Knoxville, Tenn.
At age 17 with his mother's consent, he joined the U.S. Army. He went to Germany, and at the outbreak of the Korean conflict, he was transferred to Korea for two years. He moved to Ohio and received a degree in mechanical engineering from Ohio State University. There he married Janet Elaine Rein. The have six children: Kim Elaine Tinkey, Robert C. Veals Jr., Danice Kay Tavizon, Barry Scott Veals, Dion Anthony Veals and Kirstie Rachel Bennett.
In 1958, he became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He and his family were sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple in 1971.
He worked for Thermadisk and Mansfield Tire. He also owned/operated three service stations in Ohio and was president of the Gasoline Dealers Association of Ohio. In 1976, he moved to Utah and was employed by Thiokol's engineering department.
His wife, Janet, died in 1985. He later married Virginia Sparks Grover and moved to North Ogden. They served a mission in Nauvoo during the dedication of the temple. He has served as elder's quorum president, on the high council and Sunday School.
He is a member of the North Ogden Kiwanis Club. His hobbies are working on and refurbishing old player pianos, golfing, fishing and watching Western movies, especially those starring John Wayne. He enjoys spending time with his family.
