SYRACUSE — The man directing the city’s fire department in the absence of a fire chief for the past two months resigned abruptly at the end of a city council meeting Tuesday, on a night when the council tabled a motion to hire a new chief. Council members voted 4-1 to table the motion after Councilwoman Karianne Lisonbee raised the option of a cost alternative, including the possibility the department could be managed by the Davis County Sheriff’s Department. The delayed action left Bruce Peterson, assistant fire chief, so angry he went to the podium in front of the council and announced he was finished and was handing in his equipment. Seconds later, after the meeting was adjourned, City Manager Robert Rice and Mayor Jamie Nagle quickly left the council chamber in pursuit of Peterson.
