SYRACUSE -- After a 50-point first half, would the state 5-A runner-up Titans crack the century mark?
Three-time defending league champion Syracuse High had to settle for matching its season-high point total Tuesday in steam-rolling the Silver Wolves 80-34 in a Region 1 romp.
"We wanted to come out and play, and put it away early," said Titans senior guard/forward Makenlee Williams. "We didn't want to let down after the Layton game (on Friday)."
Williams, who has signed with Utah State, celebrated her 18th birthday Tuesday with a game-high 29 points on 12-of-18 shooting, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range. She also had seven rebounds, one assist and three steals for Syracuse (14-0 overall, 6-0 league), which is the state's lone undefeated girls basketball team.
"It was a great win for us on my birthday, and nothing is better than playing with my best friends," said Williams, who is the No. 3 scorer in the 5-A ranks averaging 19.00 points per game.
"I'm really not going to do anything to celebrate, just hang out and watch the JV game," she said. "We did a family deal on Sunday, and I'll probably do something this weekend with my friends."
The Titans, who are 50-2 in league games since the 2008-09 season, shot 47.1 percent (33-of-70) -- 41.7 percent (5-of-12) from downtown -- and outrebounded Fremont 45-35 with 15 offensive boards.
"Our defense was great today, and when the subs came in the intensity was still there," Williams said. "The coaches said something in the locker room to take better care of the ball, and 22 (turnovers) last week (versus Layton) was a little extreme."
Syracuse turned the ball over 13 times, with 16 assists and 17 steals.
Oklahoma State-bound Brittney Martin -- the No. 4 scorer in 5-A at 18.92 ppg -- rang up a double-double of 24 points and 11 rebounds. She was 10-of-17 from the floor with one assist, three steals and a blocked shot. Jayda Bovero had eight points, four boards, three assists and three steals for Syracuse, which is 81-5 since Williams' and Martin's freshman season with one state 5-A title.
Martin and Williams departed the game with 6:44 remaining and the Titans leading by 44 points.
"It's pretty cool to get that 50th league win and on my birthday, too," Williams said. "Brittney and I totally feed off each other."
Sophomore Amanda Wayment scored a team-high 14 points on 6-of-13 shooting with six rebounds and one steal for the Silver Wolves (5-12, 2-4), who had won their last two games.
