OGDEN -- With National Signing Day coming today, Weber State is wrapping up commitments for new football coach John L. Smith's first recruiting class.
At least six Utah products are expected to ink a national letter of intent, including AJ Wilcox, a 6-foot-5, 235 pound defensive end from Syracuse High.
With senior starting quarterback Mike Hoke out for spring practices after having surgery to repair his separated shoulder, more reps may be available for Weber State's newest QB signees alongside the returning signal-callers.
The Wildcats have a verbal commitment from Braden Corpus, a 6-foot-1 quarterback from Borah High School in Boise, Idaho. Corpus may have the chance to target Borah teammate Cody McKague, a 6-4 tight end, and be protected by Maxwell Curtis, an offensive lineman from nearby Meridian.
Spanish Fork quarterback Breck Lewis, who committed with the 2009 class, has returned from an LDS mission and is already on campus. Preston High defensive lineman Shane Oliverson (Hyde Park), another returned missionary from the '09 class, and juco transfer safety Chris Wheeler, from Alan Hancock College, are also enrolled already.
Counting Lewis, Oliverson and Wheeler, the Wildcats should add at least 18 players today, 10 on offense and eight on defense, with the potential for as many as four more.
Utah's contingent of six is the most from any one state, followed by three from Smith's home state of Idaho, three each from Florida and Texas, two from California and one from Georgia.
Offensive lineman Austin Mikkelson (St. George, Pine View HS), and Hunter High teammates Devonte Maez (West Valley City), a cornerback, and Siamani Harris (Kearns), a defensive end, are among other Utahns reportedly ready to join the Wildcats.
Gamal Fowler (Dayton, Texas) is the lone wide receiver expected in the class.
Cameron Young (Cove, Texas), Duncan Farnsworth (Lilburn, Ga.), Joe Hawkins (Vero Beach, Fla.) and Yuvraaj Madra (Mather, Calif.) will be asked to bolster Weber State's offensive line.
Cornerback Cordero Dixon (Gainesville, Fla.), Hason Ali (San Antonio, Texas) and linebacker Marquel Holmes (Ocala, Fla.) have committed on the defensive side.
Coaches are prohibited from discussing recruits until their national letters of intent are signed, sealed and delivered.
Around the state, Utah State coach Gary Andersen will hope to parlay a bowl appearance into a solid recruiting class. Indications are the Aggies will use the juco route to reload, although getting early commitments from Logan High QB D.J. Nelson and Fremont High running back Nick Vigil were solid pick-ups.
BYU received an early commitment from Davis High defensive lineman Troy Hinds, considered the top prep in-state recruit. Utah got a commitment from Syracuse High defensive lineman Hunter Dimick, as well as Davis High offensive lineman Zach Lindsay.
